The story behind clog up

Wilma, hierdie een is vir jou!

Once upon a time there was a little clog in  Holland. He was very down because he longed to be clean, but he was always full of mud. His co-clogs, equally dirty, but not unhappy about it, watched in trepidation as he became more and more depressed.  As they were male clogs and not blessed with superior emotional intelligence, they did not really know how to help their dirty little friend. They eventually resorted to mumbling: “Clog up!” every time they saw him, in an effort to get him out of the pit of despair. At first it irritated him, but later he just started laughing when he heard those words. After a few weeks, he started to accept his filthy state and the fact that it would be a permanent state of affairs, at least for as long as he would be a working clog. So, he invited his dear, dirty co-clogs for a few rounds of Dutch beer to celebrate his new-found insights. And it was bottoms up all the way, into the early hours of the morning!

To this day, in clog country, “clog up” is a friendly reminder to cheer up, look on the bright side and make the best of things!
